你好 (nǐ hǎo) Hello

Now that you’ve dipped your toes a little into some of the more interesting or useful phrases, let’s take a moment to get to some basics. Hello.

你好 (nǐ hǎo)

That’s how you say hello. Easy, right? So what happens if you want to be extra polite, perhaps speak to a senior, that kind of thing? Well, that’s called honourifics. It’s a way of showing good manners to the people that you respect. So how do you say it?

您好 (nín hǎo)

That’s also pretty easy. Let’s make things more interesting. What if you wanted to say, “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?”

你好,你找的人是我吗?(nǐ hǎo, nǐ zhǎo de rén shì wǒ ma?)

Unfortunately, that doesn’t take up the … right amount of syllables. You could always use …

你好,你找的人是不是我?(nǐ hǎo, nǐ zhǎo de rén shì bu shì wǒ?)
