折扣 (zhé kòu) Sales

There have been lots of sales recently, leading up to Christmas, and the aftermath known as Boxing Day sales (here in Australia.) In China, rather than telling people the discount off the total price, they tell you the percentage of the total price. So this:

6折 (liù zhé)

Actually means 60% of the total price, also known as 40% off. The number is in lots of 10%, so a modest 15% off is:

8.5折 (bā diǎn wǔ zhé)

Did you get a good bargain?
